I would very much love to write a big post with all the details like I did last year, but I’m afraid I’m too tired to do that, so a more traditional end-of-the-year post is incoming.
Here, I list what I played, what I watched, read, listened to, etc. You know how it goes. The twist is that I will highlight now only the best, but also the worst experiences.
Game of the Year: Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker
I can wax lyrical about this game ad nauseam, but the gist is that this expansion capped off the grand story that’s been going on for almost a decade, and it did that perfectly. It has probably become my favorite story in gaming.
Worst Game of the Year: eFootball 2022
I’ve been a fan of Pro Evolution Soccer for two decades, I stuck with it through thick and thin, but this abomination of a release was the final nail in the coffin. There is no longer a football game I enjoy playing. Such a shame.
TV Anime of the Year: Horimiya
The simple truth is, I stopped watching anime almost entirely. Horimiya was one of the very few titles that I finished, and, while it wasn’t the best adaptation of my beloved manga, it was satisfying enough.
Worst TV Anime of the Year: Wonder Egg Priority
A disaster on every level. The creators tried to copy many different trendy titles of the years gone, and the end result was a huge mess. As a friend of mine said, it looks like Okada, Ikuhara, and Yuasa had a child together.
Anime Movie of the Year: Aria the Crepuscolo
I am a simple man, I see Aria, I love it to bits. It’s just more Aria. If you know, you know.
Worst Anime Movie of the Year: Belle
Mamoru Hosoda is on a steady trend – each and every new movie he makes is worse than the previous one. With Belle, he sunk to a new low, hurling insults at Miyazaki for something he does much better than Hosoda. And the movie is just awful.
Film of the Year: Dune
Denis Villeneuve once again proves that Arrival was awful because of the source material. Dune is masterful, even if it’s just a half of the whole story. It’s almost poetic, even, in its presentation.
Worst Film of the Year: F9
Now, the F&F franchise was never on the Olympus of movie-making, but F9 is just inexcusably bad. Bad action set-pieces, comically awful plot, questionable acting, and badly cut up Tbilisi, which is the greatest sin of the film. A total trainwreck.
TV Series of the Year: Arcane
Video game adaptations had a curse that didn’t allow any good movies or series to see the light of day. Arcane smashed it to pieces. Masterfully directed eye candy with a competent plot that doesn’t hold it back. Season 2 soon pls.
Worst TV Series of the Year: The Witcher Season 2
There aren’t enough non-swear words for me to express just how utterly abysmal this series is. They missed every mark, jumbled all the plotlines, massacred all the characters, and added their own incoherent story. Dismal.
Book of the Year: The Pariah by Anthony Ryan
This book managed to genuinely surprise and impress me, which is no mean feat. Ryan, now with the baggage of two finished trilogies behind his back, is getting better and better.
Worst Book of the Year: Garen: First Shield
As good as some other LoL media was this year, it didn’t translate into the first League of Legends book being at least decent. It was bad. It’s mostly the writing though. Still, it added to the universe which I’m grateful for.
And let’s end on the…
Song of the Year: “wonderland” by Aimer
By this point, most of you probably know that Aimer is everything to me. And her new collab with Kajiura was destined to be my favorite song of the year. Lo and behold, it is. Much surprise.
